Good things arrive in small packages. But this small surprised me; I thought it might be missing the full kit as directly sold by Telestial. Yes, everything was all there; the unlocked phone, sim card, battery, recharger, and electrical adapter for Europe including written documentation pamphlets and a wallet sized quick reference card. This no-frills cell phone clearly is designed for the frugal traveler. Frugal because the vacation is not about telephoning on it every day to talk with the people back home; use the telephone at your lodging. The phone’s features and services provided deliver the essentials. It’s not about taking photographs with your cell phone. Your brought your own and better digital camera for that. Yet it includes a travel journal that is automatically updated and that you can manually update on the web with your camera pictures. It’s not about game playing and web-surfing but it does have texting too. It’s about a phone to place and receive a call when its necessary, an address book, and has voicemail. These three are the most important to me; it has more and sensible features as well. Such as fast dialing to essentials like local emergency services for the country that one is in, customer support, and either automatic or fast dial recharge of call minutes. But that’s not all, as goes the saying.

The customer support by telephone is very good. The people who answer your call are very knowledgeable and courteous; they are excellent. You quickly get answers and the right ones. Yet one needs to be prepared for heavy call volumes sometimes putting one on hold. Were it not for that I would rate it overall excellent. But it is not trying on one’ patience as within a few minutes wait one gets through to a real person without playing voice menu maze. And here they must be heralded for sensibly minimizing that nonsense. One finds it much easier to wait when it takes at most two levels to get to someone.

OK, what are the downsides? Fine print. No, not the legal stipulations. It’s that all the documentation provided is printed too small for these old eyes to read without strain. Go to the web-site or call customer support when one’s eyes give out. And don’t throw away anything that you get in that small box including what looks like advertising because it is useful sooner or later. There is one other thing that could be better documented. It’s the free thirty minutes one can use to receive calls without being charged or charging the cost to the caller. It took a telephone call to customer support to get it properly explained. But these are hardly onerous inconveniences that detract from the overall value and convenience.

I liken this cell phone and service to another low-cost provider in the U.S. (name intentionally withheld) that also provides excellent value in the phone but the main difference is that Telestial’s telephone customer support is superior. For the traveler who wants to vacation hassle-free, then this is the overall best value phone and service to have.

Great phone and SIM card for a trip to italy, March 24, 2011

Nice neat small cell phone that comes with $5 credit on and included SIM card which should be enough to get you started in case you have to make a call. After doing a bit of searching, this seems to be the best combination for an “Emergency/Short Conversation” phone that will work in Europe (not in the both US and Europe unless it is not “Quad Band” – I think the only drawback for a phone this price).

The phone is small enough to be hidden in a fist and comes with a few small folded manuals and a simple headset/earbuds. Did not yet try out as we did not go on the trip yet. Comes with a headset and a adapter which has a us plug and also plug adapter to fit the two round prong outlets (like Italy)and will work with both US and European voltage.

If you receive calls in the right countries (France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom), it is free (no charge against the included SIM card) but will cost the caller whatever the charge is for their country to call you as long as the +44 (UK) number is used. To call the phone when it is in one of those countries from the US you have a few options (check their website for current rates and plans):
    – Call the provided 800 number, put in the phone’s +44 number, and you can talk at no additional cost for a total of 30 minutes; more than that, 49 cents/minutes gets charged against the SIM card credit
    – go to their website where you can put more money the sim card and also get a US number for the phone (no additional charge); when that number is called from the US, the rate when I wrote this was 30 cents a minute charged against the SIM card
    - call from a US home or cell phone (rates vary – may be close to 30 cents/minute or much more) or with a service like gmail (about 18 cents/minute) and in this case it is charged to the caller’s bill, with no charges against the SIM card in those countries. Please note when researching rates it is more expensive to call a UK mobile number which this is than a landline.
    - Sending texts to the US number will cost 15 cents. Sending texts back is 75 cents.
All of the above will still work if you put the SIM card in another GSM phone, so even if the phone gets broken you should be able to use another compatible phone and still use the same number.

The simplest way to use it is If you want to call someone back home, just call them from the phone (cost 99 cents minute) or text them (75 cents), give them the US number and tell them to call you (again, 30 cents/minute).

I ordered two of the V520 kits for my upcoming trip to Europe. I previously ordered a sim card from Telestial since I already had an unlocked phone. I was so pleased with the service and rates that I ordered these two kits for my travel companions. We use these phones if we get separated or if we are doing different things during the day. A quick call or text message to let your companions know where to meet is so much easier than trying to coordinate everything in the morning before you leave the hotel. Keep in mind that it’s a pretty basic phone, but that’s exactly what I was looking for. I don’t need a camera or an mp3 player on my traveling phone – only something to make a quick call or text. It’s also a snap to set up and the Telestial customer service is great if you have any questions or problems. I would highly recommend the V520 kit – it’s the perfect in a pinch vacation phone.
